Pointe Black Company

Pointe Black Company was created to address the lack of visible, supported pathways for dancers of Black heritage within ballet and contemporary ballet spaces.

Too often, Black dancers are asked to navigate training, performance, and professional development in environments where they are underrepresented, misunderstood, or expected to conform to narrow traditions. We started the Pointe Black Company to offer something different: a space where technical excellence, cultural awareness, and community are not in conflict - they are foundational.

Our work is rooted in a distinct movement language that blends classical ballet foundations with contemporary movement practices, shaped by Black cultural expression, musicality, and storytelling. This fusion allows dancers to move with technical clarity while remaining connected to their histories, instincts, and individuality.

The Company exists as an extension of Pointe Black’s wider mission: ballet without the barriers, where Black dancers can train, perform, and be seen without having to dilute who they are.

The Pointe Black Company supports Black dancers at two distinct stages of their artistic and professional journey:

Junior Company

Our Junior Company is designed for intermediate, pre-professional dancers seeking performance experience. This level supports dancers who are developing their technique, artistry, and confidence, while gaining insight into professional rehearsal processes and expectations.

Senior Company

Our Senior Company is for advanced, professional-level dancers, often those who have completed university or conservatoire training. This level centres performance, research, and artistic development within a professional company environment.

There are currently no scheduled auditions for the Pointe Black Company.

However, attending Company Class acts as a pathway into the Company. These classes allow us to build relationships, observe dancers over time, and understand who may be interested in future Junior or Senior Company opportunities.

Company Class exists as a place where dancers of Black heritage can come together without cultural barriers; free from the pressure to ‘code switch’, feel excluded, or separate who they are from how they move. It is a space to train rigorously, but also to be in community.

Company Class supports connection as much as progression. Dancers train alongside peers who share similar experiences, values, and aspirations, fostering a sense of belonging that extends beyond the studio.

All Company Classes are taught by teachers of Black heritage (like all Pointe Black offerings), ensuring that dancers are led by artists who understand the cultural, social, and emotional realities that Black dancers often navigate within training spaces. This shared understanding allows for greater empathy, trust, and care within the studio, creating an environment where dancers feel supported, not scrutinised.

Company Class is open to all dancers of Black heritage who are interested in professional-level training, performance pathways, and working within a company rooted in community and excellence.
